About this episode

Economist Gustavo Vélez put the numbers on the table. Puerto Rico lost its capacity to grow years ago, recent gains rode on roughly $34 billion in federal recovery money, and labor productivity keeps falling. The island is back to about its 1980s population, much older, and needs some 200,000 more workers after roughly 600,000 people left. Structural fixes will take a decade or more, he said, so organizations have to get more from their own people now.
