About the Section

Most of the adults I advise learned to edit who they were long before their first job. These essays are for the parents, educators and young people who can change that earlier: raising children to know who they are, making room for them to say it, and staying close while they become it. They draw on all three practices of my work, and on what I am learning as I build Teens UnEdited, an effort to help young people find their own words before the world supplies them.

Why this section exists

Young people find themselves by struggling to find their own words. I started Teens UnEdited because today's tools increasingly supply those words first. These essays are where that work begins in public.
